Religion

Our students are given many opportunities to pray throughout the day.  Children are encouraged to bring their prayer intentions to the classroom so that we may pray for the things that are important to them, no matter how big or small.  We attend weekly Mass as a school.

Kindergarten Religion incorporates stories from the Old and New Testament.  Students will learn traditional Catholic prayers as well as how to talk to God in daily prayer.  They will learn from the Bible, "What would Jesus do?", and how to include Jesus' teachings into their everyday lives.  Our Religion time allows us to introduce many science and health concepts as the children learn that the world we live in is a wonderful gift from God and we are the caretakers.

First grade Religion uses the We Believe series by Sadlier.  In first grade we learn about the Mass, saints, prayers, and the rosary.  We integrate Religion into our daily teaching.

Second grade Religion uses the We Believe series by Sadlier.  This program uses a catechetical process for each lesson:  We Gather, We Believe, We Respond.  We gather in prayer at the beginning of each lesson.  We read about the truths of the Catholic faith found in sacred scripture and tradition.  We respond to the message of the lesson by each sharing their thoughts and feelings.  There will be activities, stories, and discussion questions, which will further the connections among the catechests, children, and families.  The students will receive two of the blessed sacraments in the second grade:  Reconciliation and Holy Communion.  This is a very joyous, sacred, and blessed event that will occur in your child's life.  They are taught Jesus will always forgive us and will always love us no matter what we do through the sacrament of Reconciliation.  We will become closer to Jesus through His own Body and Blood in the sacrament of Holy Communion. ( Retreats for each sacrament will be scheduled during the year.)

Third grade Religion continues with the Sadlier series, We Believe. At this level, the empasis is on understanding our Catholic Church.  We also study a number of prominent saints in the Church.  An important part of our Religion program is memory work.  Memorizing Bible verses, traditional prayers and hymns reinforce the lessons in the Religion book and helps the students, for as our Lord urged, "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven."  (Matthew 6:20)

Fourth grade Religion uses the level 4 of We Believe in the Sadlier series entitled, "God's Law Guides Us."  Special emphasis is placed on the study of the Ten Commandments.

Fifth grade Religion also uses the We Believe by Sadlier series.  The focus for fifth grade is on the Seven Sacraments. Fifth grade is also the year when we present Gifts and Promises, a faith based approach to the teaching of human sexuality.  We are fortunate to be able to present not only the physical facts of this topic, but we also look at it from the perspective of God's plan for humanity and His will in our lives.

Sixth and Seventh grade Religion deepens their understanding of our faith by studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, scripture and the rites of the Church, saints, feasts and devotions, the liturgy, and the sacraments. Each day, students bring their We Believe religion books and an open heart.
